Dr. Hans Dembowski

I am a journalist, have written an OUP book on public interest litigation in India and teach writing skills. Having grown up in Frankfurt, London, Chicago and Tübingen, I am a native speaker of both English and German.

Journalist

From January 2004 to December 2024, I served as the editor-in-chief of D+C Development and Cooperation (www.dandc.eu) and the identical German language twin E+Z Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit. The job was to provide Germany’s Federal Government with a credible forum for international debate. Previously, I was a staff member of Frankfurter Rundschau (2000 to 2003) and Deutsche Welle Radio (1990 to 2000), specializing in international trade and global development.

Global-development scholar

My book “Taking the state to court – Public interest litigation and the public sphere in metropolitan India” was published by Oxford University Press in 2001. It was based on the empirical essay for which Bielefeld University awarded me my PhD in 1999. OUP discontinued international distribution, however, after the Calcutta High Courts started a contempt-of-court case. The case has been kept pending since 2001, and the High Court never notified me. The non-governmental Asienhaus has documented the OUP book in a digital version on its website.

Writing skills teacher

I have taught writing skills in many places, including Manila, Amman and Accra, mostly working on behalf of Deutsche Welle, the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and the International Institute for Journalism.
